When children have trouble following directions and finishing things, it’s easy to assume that they’re not paying attention or, as they are so often told, not trying hard enough. But sometimes they’re struggling with what’s called “working memory” — the ability to keep in mind the information they need in order to do something.

Working memory plays a major role in how we process, use and remember information on a daily basis. Children with ADHD or a learning disorder often have less working memory available to them because it takes a lot of effort to filter out distractions or perform processes, like decoding, that other children do automatically.
